The waters off Madeira shelter close to a third of all known cetacean species. Some twenty-eight have been logged within sight of the island's volcanic coast, from resident bottlenose dolphins to migrating sperm and pilot whales.
The vessels that work this stretch of sea are broad, twin-hulled sailing craft, chosen for their stability over the long ocean swell and for the low wake that lets them approach pods without alarm. Their decks sit close to the waterline, and the meeting of animal and observer happens near eye level.
The tradition of watching, rather than hunting, is recent. Madeira's stations processed sperm whales until 1981, when the last harpoon boat was retired and the industry closed.
